Last January, I decided I needed a Word of the Year. I needed one word that would propel me into the new year with a direction… a goal… a reason for doing what I do. That word was TRY.
I got some flack for it. Some people thought that if I just tried at something, I wouldn’t have any accountability if I didn’t follow through. As long as I only tried, I might not stick with anything. That wasn’t my intention. At all.
My thought process in choosing TRY was that I wanted to actually try doing new things. I tend to stick to the safe and sound and as I get closer to the big 5-0, I don’t want to look back and wonder why I had played it so safe all along. I needed to get out of my comfort zone. Because nothing worthwhile is comfortable. Or easy. Sometimes you have to just TRY to finally see all the possibilities.
So, I took the jump. I tried a lot of new things that were uncomfortable, not easy, not something I thought I would ever have done. And I realized a few things.
1. Trying new things wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Taking step one is the hardest step.
2. With trying, I learned what actually worked for me and what didn’t. It opened up new paths that I wouldn’t have seen before.
3. I met new people… people who have become friends in every sense of the word. I opened up my circle and in came some of the most incredible women I’ve ever met.
4. Even though trying new things is scary, it is worth doing. Absolutely.
For 2014, I was trying to come up with a new word that I wanted to focus on. It wasn’t easy. I feel like I’ve come really far over the past year and I positioned myself for bigger and better things. I’m ready.
That’s my word.
When I started writing this post, I honestly had no idea what my word would be. I thought I’d have to go online and research words and see what other people were saying. But no… it was some kind of divine intervention. As soon as I wrote the word “ready” I knew that had to be it.
So for 2014… my word is READY. I am SO SO SO ready for my goals to be met and my dreams to come true. Let’s make this happen!

Great word! Love your word try and especially when you explain it is an awesome and perfect word. My word this year was present- being present in the moment. For next year it is “aware”, I will explain why on my blog in a couple of days. 🙂
Awesome, Carolyn! READY is such a fantastic word…ready to move on, ready for anything, ready for whatever LIFE brings 🙂 Cannot wait for what our blogging has in store for us in 2014! xo
accepting it with open arms - I like the way you think! Great word - and kuddos to you for trying in 2013. Sounds like you did great!
Great word Carolyn and looking forward to seeing where 2014 will be taking you =)
I like this word as ready is a good place to be! Our words were similar last year. My word was embrace which is a lot like try. Happy New Year!
