My SoCal Lady Bloggers partner, Megan, comes up with a word of the year every New Year’s instead of a list of resolutions. I thought it was a great idea. As I read several other blogs, I noticed other people were doing the same thing. We all know resolutions are usually pointless. Goals are good and I believe everyone should have some of those. But a word… one specific word… that you will focus on the entire year, is something that can truly change your entire perspective. So I came up with one of my own.
But first, I wanted to share some of the other words floating around.
Nourishing
Ta-Da
Happiness
Clarity
Believe
Heard
Anyway
Durantastic
Success
Relax
So now my word. A little unconventional (although I don’t think I could top Durantastic), but my word for the year is….
TRY
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I have a HUGE fear of failure. It stems from the fact that I’ve been told so many times over the course of my life that I couldn’t do something, I shouldn’t be doing something, why on earth am I doing that, why don’t you do something different, I would do it differently, you don’t know what you’re doing, my way is better, etc. It’s all sunk in so deep that I am really afraid to even try doing so many of the things I really want to do. But… I’ve got to STOP this crap. I realize that I am never going to get anywhere I want to go if I don’t at least keep trying new things, taking on new projects, putting myself out there and stepping out of my comfort zone.
So 2013 is going to be all about the word TRY. I know I might fail, but I’m okay with that. If I don’t try, then I’ve already failed. Haven’t I?

Inspiring post. My word then would be: COLLABORATION. Happy New Year, Carolyn.
I love that word… “Collaboration”. Opens up so many wonderful possibilities.
Try! that is a great and very powerful word… Encouraging and keeping you open to endless possibilities. My word for the year is relax. I tend to stress over little things, which then leads me to unhealthy choices I get upset and everything goes wrong due to my reaction. So I will work on being more relaxed on the little things and not worry so much.
Love it! I have the same fear so I’m definitely taking your word to heart! Wishing you lots of luck in 2013!
Great idea for a theme for the year! We can’t succeed if we do not try! I think mine would be *Embrace*. As I get older, I just want to embrace all the friendships, opportunities and happiness that life offers. Happy New Year to you Carolyn & best wishes for an awesome 2013!
I happen to love the word “try” although it gets a bad rap. “Do or do not, there is no try” being the big Star Wars Yoda quote.
I think taking a first step with the knowledge that you MIGHT fail and you do it anyway is to be lauded. I have a feeling that you will succeed at many more things than you think you might.
PS - Many thanks for the DD nod. It is my intention to infect the world with Duran. 😉
Try is a great word! I think Try attitude sets you up for optimism and even if you do fail, heck you already won by trying!

Love this! Try.. We could all try, couldn’t we? Absolutely flipping love it!!
Thanks. Seemed fitting.
I agree with the others-TRY is a great word! This year, I am on a motivational kick this year-either I’m going to get certain things done, or give it up-and TRY is a perfect word for me!
Your post makes me think of my own mindset that I struggled with. Then one day, I decided to think about what I COULD do, and realized I can actually do a LOT. I hope you will do the same-even the small things add up-knowing how to cook, type, play an instrument, etc. This helped me a lot. I hope you are able to overcome the negative as well.
Happy New Year!
I’m having a hard time narrowing it down to just one word-as a writer, I always tend to find myself making explanations for what I’m saying…..
