Project Organization: Step 1

by Carolyn West on December 28, 2013

Wow… I had no idea so many people had the same dis-organization issues as I do. So what are we going to do about it? I think the first step is to figure out exactly what needs to be organized. Is it your personal stuff, your professional stuff, your closets, your paperwork… all of the above? (My hand is raised.)

I guess since my lack of organization is now out in the open, I might as well embrace it. I went through my house and decided these were some of the worst areas. I am going to have to tackle these first.

Don’t tell me your’s doesn’t look kind of like this. I tend to use my laptop on the kitchen table when I’m doing serious work, but I think I would be much more productive if I had a dedicated desk (a clean, dedicated desk) to work from. My desk is kind of my catch-all for the stuff I clear off the bedroom dresser and kitchen table. My poor desk. Time for Mama to clean you up and make you happy again.

Okay, okay… I know. This is what is supposed to be a floor. If you look closely, you just might make out a tiny little bit of it. Very tiny. You know what happens when I start to clean off my desk? Yep… all the stuff ends up on the floor. Because my reasoning is that once I clean off the desk top, I’ll then get to the floor. But something always stops me (I don’t know… maybe a kid or something) and then the stuff piles up on the floor… and the desk piles up with even more crap too.

David and I share the office space, although we have separate desk spaces. I’ll spare you his desk, but we also share the bookshelf that has been a thorn in my side for years. Yes, we DO need everything on the shelves, but figuring out how to best organize it has not come easy. It’s time to make a plan and stick to it.

So… the office is my #1 priority. I decided to start a Pinterest Board for all my organizational inspirations. And you are all my witnesses. This MUST happen.

What about you? What room/area/drawer in your house are you doing to start with?

I’m not even going to talk about my home office… it is scary! But I think you’ve inspired me to get it organized today!

hahaha! That looks EXACTLY like my desk (except my desk is L-shaped, so there’s tons more s*/t on it). I did manage to toss a whole garbage bag full of clothes into the donation pile this week though.
I suppose I will need to get the desk organizing started soon too, since my editorial calendar is underneath everything….

My bedroom. The whole thing. I am so scared I’m a hoarder. I feel like I get rid of stuff ALL THE TIME but it just never ends. And I get overwhelmed and then ignore the problem for a long period of time while it just gets worse. I’ve gotta get it together!

Today we tackled M’s room and it looked somewhat similar. No joke. Btw, Jay’s nickname for me is often “Pile Pig”. You’re not alone.

I’m a mail hoarder so my first thing to tackle is to file or shred old mail.
