I first drafted this post back in September. I always have it in the back of my mind that I’m going to need a new word for the upcoming year, but I rarely have a word that pops in my head so far from the end of the year. I usually struggle to figure out what one word can encompass all that I want to do. Many people make resolutions or have a phrase or inspirational quote they focus on. I like the one word thing… it helps me focus. It is less muddy. It give me strength and yes, I do refer back often to that one word throughout the year.
So, for the rundown of my previous words:
TRY (2013)
READY (2014)
CHANGE (2015)
This year, the word that I’ve been keeping under wraps the past few months is -
How perfect is PROSPER for everything I want 2016 to be. I have been working like crazy this past year to build a business and become a serious breadwinner alongside my husband. I can now say that I have gotten to that point, however, I want to reach a certain level of income where my husband can begin to explore some of the other interests he has and doesn’t feel like work has to take up every moment of every day. Nobody wants that!
I also turned 50 a week ago and I feel like I’m just now flourishing, thriving, and blooming. I still have so much I want to do… I need to make sure it gets done and doesn’t sit as an item on some list hidden away in a notebook somewhere.
So… PROSPER it is!
Do you have a Word of the Year? Or a phrase or quote you want to focus on in 2016? Share in the comments please. I would love to know what direction you are heading in.

“Clear” is my word. Keep my home and workspace clear. Be clear in my focus.
I love that word. It encompasses so much of life.
I love your word!! I’ve never written a post like this until now & to me it reminds me of “The Secret” where you put that word out there in the universe & hope that it comes true (along with hard work). My word for 2016 is “positive.”
Positive is a great word too. I love having one specific word. So far, the ones I chose the past few years have been right on the money.
I haven’t written it down yet (so it’s liable to change), but right now my word looks like “Light.” I hope to get my post up in the next few days, so you’ll have to check and see how committed I am to this.
I do like your word; its good and strong. When I look at that for myself though, I feel like I’m still working my way up to that.
You know, it did take me a while to work up to that. I honestly had to go through TRY, READY and CHANGE before I felt comfortable with PROSPER. It’s definitely a process.
Prosper! What an awesome word, it suits this moment in life for you perfectly and I’m so happy for you and your family. I can’t wait to see you prosper even more and what your husband will do in 2016. You both make an great team. PS you make 50 look perfect, I hope I reach 50 like you.
Oh you will! I can’t let 2016 pass me by without us getting together.
I LOVE it! When I first was talking to you about this post on Twitter, I hadn’t yet written my post & my rule is to read no other words of the year until mine is done 😉
Congrats on the SM business success. Mine is steady, but, hoping to gain more clients this year.
Now THAT is a great word, Mary. You are doing so many things you wanted to do… I know 2016 will be a huge turning point for you.
Love the intention you set with your powerful word of the year! I’d love to hear how your words from previous years influenced you through the year.
You’ve inspired me! I’m choosing : Essence. I tend to over-plan and have realized through this past year that I actually end up using the plan for only half of what I do. The other half is lead by my intuition, my essence. So this year, I’m going to consciously tip the ratio: More essence, less over-planning! Or perhaps planning just enough with the knowing that my essence will lead the way.
Great post! Thanks, Carolyn! Also loved reading other perspectives.
Happy and Prosperous New Year 🙂
YES! I do think most of us tend to over-plan. One thing I’ve learned in all my years is that over-planning doesn’t usually get you where you NEED to be. It gets you where you THINK you need to be. When you take it a day at a time and really get into your “flow” (I hate that word, but it fits here) you find you follow the path you are supposed to take and you are open to other opportunities.
Great word Carolyn! I love how your words have all flowed over the years too! Congratulations on your business successes and may they continue in 2016 and beyond. My word & theme for the year is Balance. Wishing you a happy new year and hope to see you sometime this year!
