My oldest daughter finished up her last day of school and declared she wouldn’t pick up another book all summer. My middle daughter came home from her last day of school and went to her room to work on math problems. My youngest daughter, fresh from her 2nd year in kindergarten and a brand new reader, declared… I want to bring lots of books on our summer vacation. That’s my girl!
My kids are all different but when they DO want to read a good book, I always go back to the books I loved as a kid. They are timeless and as a lifelong lover of books, I relish being able to share my favorites with my kids.
These are my 5 favorite books for kids.
1. Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, by Judy Blume - Any book by Judy Blume is a winner and I highly recommend letting your daughters read them all.
2. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle - I keep coming back to this amazing fantasy even 30 years later.
3. The Twits, by Roald Dahl - Not as well knows as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but this book is just plain fun to read.
4. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis - Even if you have seen the movie, read the book… and then read the entire series.
5. Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White - This classic remains at the forefront for a reason… heartwarming story of friendship and acceptance.
