Upon Request… My Challah Recipe

November 5, 2011

I’ve been making challah for years. I used to make it every Friday night for the Sabbath dinner, but honestly, I’m lucky if I can scrape together the dinner part much less baking a challah too. Now, I try to at least make it once a month. I suppose I could slave over it all day long, but I don’t. I take the easy way out… I use a bread machine. It’s easier and I don’t have to sit and knead bread all day long.

So, after many requests for my “famous” challah recipe. Here it is!

Ingredients:

3/4 cup warm water
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
3 2/3 cup flour
2 tsp yeast (or 1 packet)

Put all the ingredients listed into the Bread Machine. Set to the “dough” cycle. The machine will mix and knead the dough for you. All machines are a little different but mine takes 90 minutes to go through the cycle.
When finished, punch down the dough and separate into three pieces. Braid the dough.

Cover with a clean dish cloth and let rise for one hour. Then, brush the top of the loaf with mixed egg yolks. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until golden brown in color.
