The one thing I hate doing most of all is cleaning my house. HATE IT! I feel like it’s a complete waste of time. Not that I don’t love having a clean house. Of course I do. I just hate that the time I spend cleaning it takes me away from other things I’d rather be doing… namely, anything! Since I’m the only one who ever does the cleaning, I am always on the hunt for things that are going to make my job easier.
Now, my husband (who doesn’t ever clean anything in the house unless we are having a lot of people over… like on a holiday or something) is a cleaning product fanatic. Okay… I know… doesn’t really go hand-in-hand does it? He won’t actually DO the cleaning, but he loves buying cleaning products. Seriously. We’ll go to the store and he wants to buy new mops, new dusters, new cleaning cloths, new sprays. It’s crazy. It’s as if he thinks I’m sitting home cleaning all day… when if you look at our house, it is undeniably clear that I DO NOT spend much time cleaning.
One of the things he has been bugging me about a lot lately is getting a new vacuum cleaner. I usually just lug out shop vac up the stairs from the garage when I need to vacuum. I know… not the most useful tool… but I don’t have a lot of room to store a big vacuum so I figured, why bother? When I had a chance to try out the new Dyson Small Ball I thought this might actually be a good fit for us. David gets a new vacuum… I get something that might actually be lightweight, fit in a closet… and clean our floors without a lot of struggle and wasted time.
I have to say, this vacuum is pretty cool. I know Dysons are supposed to be really powerful, but this one is pretty mighty despite being small. It weighs just 12.15 lbs and is 30% quieter than the models that came before it. It also captures crazy amounts of dirt (and pet hair) and has a whole-machine HEPA filtration system, so it gets over 99% of pollen, mold, and bacteria - trapping them in the bin. The thought of having all that stuff on my floors and in my carpet is enough to make me sick. Maybe I really do need to think about vacuuming more often.
It’s not an inexpensive machine… but honestly, at $399.99 it isn’t too terrible when you think about all that nasty stuff you can pick up and how utilitatian it is. You can also purchase it on Amazon (and get free shipping if you have Amazon Prime) starting today, February 28.
With an Australian Shepherd living in the house, we have an endless supply of dog hair. It usually accumulates under the couches and under the bed… and under the tables… and under the dresser… and clings to the carpet. Oh sheesh… it’s everywhere.
What I Like About the Dyson Small Ball
- It’s pretty cool looking
- It sucks up dirt like a champ
- It fits in my tiny closest
- It’s easy to clean the cobwebs from my walls
- It’s easy to clean the drum
What I Dis-Like About the Dyson Small Ball
- Instructions are a little unclear - I really like the vacuum, but seriously Dyson… work on your instructions booklet. It took us a while to figure out how to get the handle out and how to use all the attachments. Once we did, it was great.
Small learning curve, but great vacuum! The only problem? I don’t have any more excuses for not keeping my floors clean.
What is your biggest cleaning problem?

Hi Carolyn, thanks for the nice and honest review. My biggest cleaning problem has been laziness. But thankfully I have a wonderful wife who takes care of all cleaning tasks. Also, thanks goes to my habit of buying new cleaning tools. I also love them to review on my blog. 🙂
