Don’t laugh. When was the last time you hula hooped? Go on, think about it. Probably when you were a kid? I thought so. Remember how much fun it was? Everyone I know had one and we would take them out and try and balance them on our hips for as long as possible. The secret that nobody told us about was that it was actually an incredible exercise. That’s right… even as kids we knew a good workout when we saw one.
As we got older, we put aside our hula hoops because they were considered childish. Silly. Many of us lost our “hip action” that kept that hoop moving around and around. Well, I think it’s time to get it back. And lucky for us, hoops are making a HUGE comeback.
First… a little history lesson.
Hula hoops have been around forever. Nobody can really trace the origins back, but it’s known that ancient Greeks used hoops for exercise way back in the… well, the ancient Greek times. In 1958, the Wham-O company (remember them?) first mass produced them and sold 20 million of them in the first 6 months of production. That’s a lot of hoops. Although the Hula Hoop fell out of favor rather quickly, it made a comeback in the 1980′s for a brief period of time. Today, “hooping” has become a whole new fitness craze. And it’s one that I just might be able to get my hips around.
This is MY hoop.
Pretty, isn’t it? My hips are definitely a little stiff and I’m way out of practice, but I’d rather do 10 minutes a day of hula hooping than an hour of walking, running or a boring exercise video. The fact is: it’s FUN. And it’s something you can do with the kids. Who doesn’t love a hula hoop?
Take a look at this…
How cool is this? I want to learn to do that. Lucky for me, my friend Jackie Hesley is the Hula Hoop Queen. Jackie has been hooping for 5 years and has created an amazing workout class using the hula hoop. It doesn’t matter what age, shape or size you are, you CAN learn to hoop. Think you won’t get a good workout? Think again. Hooping burns 400 calories per hour, the same as taking a kickboxing class. You don’t even have to do it for an hour (that’s a long time), but even in sporadic bursts of 5 minutes here and there, you can get a great workout. Everybody has 5 minutes!
There are classes all over California and I’m going to have Jackie teach me everything she knows. If you want to take a class with me, let me know.
Check out her website Hoop Trainer to learn about hoops, find a class near you and purchase your very own hoop.
This is not a sponsored post. I am not getting any compensation to promote Jackie and Hooping. I just happen to think it’s pretty awesome.

Something about this post reminded me of the famous “You know…for kids!” line from the Hudsucker Proxy! I do own a hula hoop-or more accurately, my 9-year-old does, and I look like an apopletic epileptic when I try to do it. I need practice. Or a class taught by that hula hoop rockstar int he video. It’s one of those skills you gotta keep polished. Don’t use it, and you lose it!

It’s true - you kind of do lose it. My kids are so much better than I am.
I love hula hooping! Last year for Mother’s Day my kids gave me a new hula hoop. I never thought about using it to intentionally exercise, I just have been using mine for fun.
What a great exercise plan!
