Vacation: Over

by Carolyn West on January 13, 2013

After 3 1/2 weeks off from school, the kids are going back tomorrow. Can I get a Hallelujah?

I love my children, but to have them home for so long makes life a little stressful for everyone. I can take summer vacation… it seems a little different. My mindset is different. We have enough time (2 months) to get into a new routine and make it work. This winter break crap…well, it’s just… crap! The first few days are fabulous. Sleeping in, hanging around in pajamas all day, staying up late. Awesome. But after about a week of that, you start wondering why these little creatures have turned into leeches. They hang on you every minute of the day.

“What are we doing today, Mom?”

“Why can’t we do anything fun?”

“We never go anywhere!”

“Why do we have to leave the house?”

“Why do I have to get dressed? We’re not going anywhere.”

Seriously! Do I look like a children’s party entertainer? It is my job to provide food, shelter, clothing and love. It is NOT my job to take you to amusement parks, movies and on expensive shopping trips. Kids being out of school = Mom has to turn down payable jobs. Just like most normal children, my kids think money grows on the tree out back. Or that we just whip out the little plastic card in our wallet.

We went to the mall yesterday. They wanted to spend some of their own hard-earned (ahem!) money. I vowed I would buy them each a new pair of shoes but that was IT! They looked around and around and around. Disney Store. Bath & Body Works. Claire’s. I heard the same thing over and over again.

“Everything is so expensive.”

You think?

In the end, they purchased a plug-in fragrance for their rooms (and just in time I might add). They also bought some earrings and a lip gloss. They had money left over. Me? I was ready to tear my hair out. Mall + 3 Girls = Migraine.

Oh yes… school please!
