Last weekend we drove down to San Diego to visit some friends who moved down there last summer. I had been promising Amanda we’d do this for a while. She was so sad when her best friend moved away… and I was in her exact same position when I was her age. I know what she was feeling.
Since San Diego is only a few hours drive, I thought it would be a nice getaway during winter break for all of us. It was. But it was also so much more. It isn’t often you get the chance to meet another family who you wish was yours. Or spend time around children who aren’t your own family, who you love just as much as if they were your own.
We didn’t do anything super special or fancy or expensive. We visited the Tide Pools and hung out at their house. We had an amazing dinner and enjoyed the fire pit. We talked, we relaxed, and we realized how sad WE were that we weren’t living in San Diego ourselves.
Sometimes it just takes stepping away from the day-to-day to get a new perspective on things. I think we all needed a break after the holidays and this was perfect. Not too far from home, yet it seemed like a world away.

I LOVE little get-aways like this. One thing I wish I could do more often is make time for them (and find friends who have the time to join me!)
