We are sushi people! We’ll eat it for lunch, for dinner, for snack, in a restaurant, at home… huh? At home? Yep… we’ve perfected the art of sushi at home with SeaPak® Butterfly Shrimp. My daughter first had the idea to make sushi at home about a year ago because we loved it so much, but eating out is expensive! When we came up with this particular recipe, we kind of looked at each other with complete surprise. It was GOOD! No, never mind… it was GREAT! Seriously… tasted WAY better than most of the sushi restaurants. Our favorite is the shrimp roll we make with SeaPak@ Butterfly Shrimp because… everything is better with shrimp!
So, making sushi isn’t as hard as you’d think. It just looks like it would be. Start with top quality ingredients.
Ingredients:
1 box SeaPak® Party Size Butterfly Shrimp
Several sheets of Nori (seaweed papers)
2 cups cooked sushi rice
Avocado (optional)
Cucumber (optional)
Sesame seeds
Hoisin sauce
You’ll also want to have a few other things on hand prior to starting.
Bamboo sushi mat
Plastic wrap
First, you’ll want to start cooking your rice. Please use sushi grade rice because it will be the same sticky rice you are used to getting in sushi restaurants and you want your sushi rolls to be perfect. Fall apart sushi is not a good idea. You can find sushi rice at Walmart, along with your SeaPak® Party Size Butterfly Shrimp. Get the Party Size because you will definitely want to snack on the extra. Cook rice according to directions. You’ll need at least 2 cups but go ahead and make more if you want… we love having extra to add to meals throughout the week.
Cook the SeaPak® Butterfly Shrimp according to the package directions. You’ll cook it and then let it cool until you are ready to put together your sushi roll.
When your rice and shrimp are done and cooled a bit, lay out a sheet of your Nori (seaweed) on top of the bamboo mat and a layer of plastic wrap. You don’t need to use a bamboo mat, but it does help to make sure your sushi roll is completely rounded.
On top of the seaweed, put down a layer of rice and then sprinkle some sesame seeds on top of that. Then you flip it! Yep… that’s why you put down the plastic wrap.
Your rice will end up on the outside of your roll. Put a layer of shrimp in the center and top with avocado (if desired). Now you’re going to do your rolling. Take a look at how we do it.
Pretty cool, isn’t it? When you cut up your roll, use a SUPER sharp knife. It helps to leave the plastic wrap on when you cut so the roll doesn’t fall apart.
Add your Hoisin sauce and some additional sesame seeds to the top and you are ready to serve!
Okay, I know you want to try this… really, you should! Grab a pack of your own SeaPak® Party Size Butterfly Shrimp, or any of the other SeaPak® products at Walmart and make sure you download this $0.75 coupon. I also picked up a pack of SeaPak® Spring Rolls (16 count box) that we whip up for after school snacks all the time. You’ll find the SeakPak® products in the frozen foods section of Walmart, not in the seafood section.

I know… we are all crazy about sushi, but a family of 5 going out for sushi gets crazy expensive. That’s why we started making it at home every now and then.
We love shrimp but I confess I’ve NEVER thought to make sushi at home like this! What a genius idea! This would be such a festive way to serve dinner! #client
My teenage daughter wants to be a chef so she decided that we should start making sushi (her favorite food) at home. Our first few tries weren’t so great, but now we’ve kind of got it down.
