I would never call myself athletic. Sure, I did some sports as a kid, but nothing really stuck with me. I spent one season playing softball (I could catch but I couldn’t throw or bat). I took tennis lessons (enjoyed them, but never had anyone really encouraging me to keep it up). I was on the swim team, but wasn’t really fast enough to win. I took figure skating lessons for a while because back in the 70’s we all wanted to be Dorothy Hamill. I never played sports in high school or even for fun later in life. Now that I’m knocking on 50’s door, I suddenly feel this need to DO more with my kids. Of course, just when I decide I want to become more physical, my body cries out, “What on earth are you thinking?” I’m going to do my best not to let my bone and joint pain slow me down.
We recently took our annual summer vacation to Las Vegas. We aren’t big gamblers, in fact, we only stepped foot in a casino on the way from the front desk to our hotel room. We enjoy Vegas because there really is so much to do as a family. We swam, we ate, we toured attractions, and we decided that for the first time we would try going hiking. It’s something we wanted to do as a family for a while, but once the kids were out of school, the weather became unbearably hot in California and nobody wanted to venture out in that. The mountains above Las Vegas are a good 20 - 30 degrees cooler and it seemed like the perfect time to start our family hiking experience.
We went up to Mt. Charleston, about 45 minutes outside of the city. It was much cooler up there and after checking all the different hiking trails, I decided on the Fletcher Canyon Trail. It wasn’t the beginner and it wasn’t the advanced. I thought an intermediate trail would be good for us. We’re no weaklings. We can do this!
Wow… going up the trail was pretty sweet. The kids complained a bit (okay, just Amanda complained really), but after a few stops for water and snacks, they perked up and we were back on our way. Little did I know that going up was the easy part. Even though there was a lot of uphill walking, it was the downhill that turned it all around.
Hiking down hills is HARD. Hard on your knees and hard on your legs. That’s when you really know how out of shape you are. Yikes!
David’s knees were in so much pain that I wasn’t sure he was going to make it. I actually felt okay… until later that night when my calves were killing me. David has been bugging me for a long time to take some kind of calcium supplement. I’ve resisted because I really hate taking anything on a regular basis. I know I probably should be doing something because, hello, I’m getting kind of old here. But David is a year older than I am and gets even less exercise than I do. Needless to say, we were both feeling our age after that hike. I knew that we needed to do something ASAP if we were going to keep up this pace and become the hiking family we wanted to be.
After we got back, I popped into Walgreens to see what kinds of supplements I could find. I ended up getting Caltrate® Bone & Joint. With one tablet a day I could help get the extra minerals my poor bones and joints desperately needed. Caltrate has Calcium + Vitamin D3 for bone strength… and I could use all the help I need with my bones right now. I can’t be the wimpy mother who can’t do anything… and I certainly don’t want to end up being a grandmother who can’t keep up with her grandkids. (Not that I am anywhere near having grandkids… sheesh!)
With Temera starting tennis camp this week, she wanted me to go out and get some more practice in with her. I haven’t really played tennis since I was a kid and even though I remember some of the tips and skills I learned, playing with her is another whole ball game. Temera is good. Really good. She only started playing a year ago and she can hit circles around me. There was no way I could get out on the courts and give her a good practice without feeling like my knees and elbows weren’t going to completely give out on me. I made sure to take my Caltrate.

Time to play tennis.
