It feels like every day someone in my family is asking me if we have a card. A birthday card. A condolence card. A congratulations card. A bon voyage card. A sorry-you’re-having-a-bad-day card. I think I’ve been going broke buying cards at the last minute, because no one ever bothers to actually tell me ahead of time that they need a card. We scrounge around for something we can re-purpose (how embarrassing is that?) or we end up trying to make up a card (which screams, “I was totally unprepared and now I have to make my own card.”) Honestly, do you know how many kid’s birthday parties my own kids have gone to? 3 kids x at least 5 friends each = 15 cards. And that doesn’t include family and friends. How on earth do I know so many people?
I am so tired of never being prepared and either running out at the last minute to buy a card or missing a birthday all together. Never mind me even having cards far enough in advance to actually MAIL them out. I’m so unorganized.
So with cards being crazy expensive, I was really kind of excited to hear that Hallmark has a line of Value Cards at Walmart. I’m talking serious value here… like $0.47 and $0.97. Crazy, right? I could actually pick up cards for everyone… for the entire year. Hmmm… now that would be smart of me. Plan in advance. What a concept!
Remember I said that I always find out I need a card at the last minute? Well, Walmart is usually where I pick them up because, hello… I practically live there. I am all about one-stop shopping. I also found out that Walmart has a Hallmark Card Rewards Program. If you buy 5 Hallmark cards at Walmart, you’ll earn rewards. If I’m buying this many cards… I want rewards!
I’m the kind of person who will stop and look at cards any time during the year when they catch my eye. I happen to like cards. It’s a thing… really. I’ll find something super cute and then not buy it because it’s not really time for a birthday yet.
So now that I have these awesome cards, I need to figure out where to put them so they don’t get swept under the rug (or put in a drawer, or wind up under a bed, or tucked in between books on the shelf). I can’t lose the cards when I need them most. I love buying cards all year and I’ll buy one especially when I think it’s a perfect fit for someone, never mind that their birthday might not be for 6 months. I knew I needed to have everything in one place so I decided to get crafty and make my own card organizer.
Did I also mention I’m kind of a craft supply addict? I buy stuff… lots of stuff, and I usually never end up using it. So I went through my stash and found a photo box that I never used. These are great because you can get them anywhere and they are very inexpensive. They also come with dividers already. I labeled them by month so I could make sure I knew what birthdays and events were coming up.
I did a little graffiti to the box with colored markers and listed all the holidays I could think of that you send cards for. It’s an extra little reminder when I go out to buy cards that I can pick up a few other types of cards when I’m shopping for birthday cards.
Now I’ll always be ready for any event that comes up. Go ahead… I dare you to catch me unprepared from now on.

I need to create a small box like this. When we were moving I found this huge plastic bin I started saving gift bags, tissue paper, and some cards. Except I never knew where it was in the last condo.
But this idea I need to do. I can’t tell you how many times I realize the night before OH CRAP! And while I did create a generic printable card for Aubrey to color - it really should go INSIDE an actual card I bought
