This past weekend was our last Hurrah! The final weekend of the summer before the kids go back to school. We have a long standing tradition in our family that we celebrate “our” official end of summer with a trip to Las Vegas. We’ve been doing this for years and it’s something the kids really look forward to. Me? Not so much anymore, but it’s nice to be able to go and relax (as best as you can relax with three kids) somewhere other than your own house.
We usually stay at different places each time because, well, we get bored easily. This time we stayed at a place with a fabulous pool so we could chill out and cool off in the heat of Nevada. We left on Friday morning and before we were even in the car the kids were complaining that they were hungry. Okay, not just the kids… the husband was complaining that we had no snacks for the trip. Honestly… it’s a 4 hour drive and they need snacks!
Okay… snacks it is! On our way out of town we made a detour to Walmart to stock up on snacks. And look what we found when we walked in the front door!
$1.00 boxes of our favorite Kellogg’s cereals. Needless to say, we were a little giddy. The boxes said 4 for $8, but there was a promotion going on for only $1.00 a box of the Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Corn Pops and Apple Jacks. OUR FAVORITES! We’re a classic kind of family. So, we just had to buy some… and what a great idea for snacks on the road. Doesn’t need refrigeration, you can eat it right out of the box, and everyone can get the variety they want.
I purchased some plastic bowls for $0.78 on clearance and we were on our way! Vegas here we come!
Now traveling with kids can be a joy… but it can also be a pain in the neck. I think it’s safe to say that this trip was no exception… we experienced highs and lows. Swimming was fun, some of the restaurants weren’t. We were disappointed that one of our favorites had changed their menu so the food we were expecting to have wasn’t available anymore. Not good… not good. By the time we got back to the hotel room, we were still a little hungry for a snack. This is when planning can save the day… make sure you bring SNACKS!
I made sure everybody had something special. I wrote all our names on the plastic bowls in metallic marker. Of course, David was the only one with blue (can you guess why?) and Lauryn had to be different and get the bowl with the built-in straw (that will come in handy for breakfast when she wants to slurp her milk).
It all worked out perfectly… and everyone had a cereal snack they loved. Especially Lauryn, because if she’s watching TV… she’s eating. All. The. Time.
Kellogg’s kind of saved our behinds on this trip. I’m pretty sure we won’t go on any car trips without a few boxes. You just never know when you are going to get hungry in the middle of the night… and cereal is so much better to snack on than candy bars or chips from the vending machines. Yuk!
Next time you’re hankering for some snack food, check out the two new varieties of Kellogg’s cereals as well:
Kellogg’s® Jif™ Peanut Butter Cereal
Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® Multigrain Shapes cereal (tastes like graham crackers… really!)
