A Girl in the Big City

August 3, 2012

Although BlogHer doesn’t officially kick in until tomorrow, today was full of meeting new friends, hugging old friends, attending parties and getting swag. Oh my… the swag. After last year, I told myself I was NOT going to go crazy with the swag (stuff we all get). I ended up with bags and bags of free stuff, most of which I didn’t need and wouldn’t use. I admit, I got caught up in the feeding frenzy of women grabbing for anything they could get their hands on… just because it was FREE. This year, I wasn’t driving to San Diego, I was flying to New York and it just wasn’t going to be practical to schlep a ton of stuff home on an airplane. Plus, after seeing all the stuff I still haven’t opened since last summer, my philosophy this year was “just say no”. However…

I didn’t exactly plan on being invited to so many events where they were passing out swag bags as if it was my 10th birthday. I got back to my room and realized I already had amassed 5 bags of swag. Oh crap! This is only the first day with 2 more to go.

Now, most of the stuff I got was really amazing… and you will see it all when I get around to doing the “SWAG” post. But I have to admit, there were a few things that had me scratching my head. Some of the stuff just didn’t make any sense to me… almost like businesses just grabbed any product that had been sitting on the shelves for months. Needless to say, I know everyone wants to get their products in the hands of bloggers, but, seriously, how about instead of handing us huge bags on the way out the door, we get to actually choose which products we really want? I now have a huge bag full of stuff that I can’t use, don’t want and have no way of getting home. I wish I could donate it to a local charity. Maybe that’s what BlogHer needs to do… have a few local charities come pick up the stuff that we don’t want.

So… despite all the free stuff I got today and the cupcakes and Pinkberry yogurt I ate, I think I must have walked about 10 miles. My poor feet. I’m pretty sure there is no foot massager in any of those bags. Maybe there will be one tomorrow.

haha I think everyone falls to the idea of swag. I think more conventions should have a donation room where you can drop things off that you may not Love or want and that can be donated to a women’s shelter or appropriate place. But that’s probably more organizing than the con has time for.

Look forward to your posts about BlogHer12!
