Back to School and Germ Free with Lysol

August 19, 2011

Each year as our kids prepare to go back to school, my husband and I start getting a little paranoid about germs. Schools are breeding grounds for all kinds of illnesses and the thought kind of makes me a little nauseous. All those grubby little hands, sticking them where they don’t belong and touching stuff… all kinds of stuff… desks, books, food, pencils… seriously it’s making me ill.

We try our best to nip the germs in the bud before they have a chance to develop into runny noses, sore throats and general I’m-too-sick-to-go-to-school moments that we dread as parents. Having a sick kid at home… no fun!

Lysol sent me one of their new products… the No-Touch Hand Soap System. I must admit I have wanted one of these for a while so I was more than a little excited when I got one in the mail. I know, soap dispensers excite me… go figure! My kids absolutely hate when I have to remind them to wash their hands. I was hoping that this new-fangled contraption might solve that problem. I think it kind of did. Call me crazy, but it’s actually fun to wash your hands. You don’t have to pump, lift, touch or do anything except put your hands UNDER the dispenser and out pops the perfect amount of soap. And it smells good too. It runs on batteries so there aren’t any plugs to worry about, especially since this is a bathroom/kitchen appliance.

I love having this in my kitchen because I am constantly washing my hands after doing every little thing. I’m getting these to put in all my bathrooms too since the kids are actually washing their hands more now that it has become something fun to do.

I know we all know how important washing our hands really is, but it’s always good at this time of year to review how effective the simple act of washing your hands really is.

Along with the No-Touch Soap System, I also got a container of Lysol Disinfecting Wipes.

Lysol Disinfecting Wipes

One of the best inventions was the disinfecting wipe. I use a crazy amount of these in my house. I primarily use them when I clean the bathrooms - I wipe down everything. Doorknobs, faucets, toilets, even the floors. I’m convinced that this is one of the reasons my kids haven’t gotten any serious illnesses in the past few years. I know the kinds of things kids leave behind… Yuk!

I think the combination of washing hands and disinfecting everything is the key to keeping your family healthy, especially now that the kids are back at school.

We are constantly washing hands here and wiping down surfaces. I have to take immune suppressant medications and we’re all aware that we really need to minimize exposure to whatever’s out there.

We have a lot of friends who have immune deficiencies so we are all very aware of how important it is to not get sick.

We are very aware of germs in our house. We do a lot of handwashing with antibacterial soap & the use of Germ-X/Sanitizer gels.

I have the GIANT tubs of the Lysol wipes: Upstairs, downstairs, at my desk. I have at least two hand sanitizers in my car, every purse, and work bag I own. This no touch dispenser is AWESOME! I need one. Like yesterday.

I don’t even know how I managed to clean before they had those wipes. The dispenser is the best. Just finished making dinner and I washed my hands about 15 times… never pumped once.

Crazy how kids get so dirty within minutes of being clean.

As a piano teacher I am very concerned about germs passing between students. I have all my students trained. First thing they do after walking through the door is take a squirt of a disinfecting gel.
I also use the same approach in my preschool music classes. The kids know that BEFORE we can touch the instruments they need a squirt of “magic goo” .

I use disinfecting wipes as well on the fridge door, doorknobs, remote, phone, etc.

I’m not the stay-in-pajamas-all-day type. I do need to run errands and pick up the kids and I have found that if I don’t shower and put on clean clothes every single day I am completely useless doing anything else. Even on weekends, I get up and shower first thing in the morning. I can’t even remember the last time I just had nothing to do all day. Might be fun.
