Once upon a time I made a promise to my husband that I would completely redecorate his home office. Technically, it is my office too since we both need our own work space and we only have the one extra room. We’ve purchased a new desk for him, new desk chairs and a bookcase/storage unit. The real problem was the color of the walls (which he hated) and me having the time to actually clean out and paint the room.
Jump ahead to a few weeks ago when I happened to get an email about a fabulous opportunity to try out Glidden Testers and select a paint color to make over a room in my house. Bingo! Office remodel time!
As a reminder, this is what the “Before” Office looked like.
So what did I do exactly?
First of all, I decided on the Palomino Gold (WG031) for the walls. This mustard color was just bright enough to lighten up the room, yet it wasn’t so bright as to make me feel like the sun was shining in my face all day long. I was a little hesitant about the color when it was going up but paint colors always dry darker than they look when they are wet. When completely dry, it matched the paint sample perfectly. I also chose this color because our laminate flooring is a light oak color and blended in nicely with the paint color.
Glidden Brilliance is a combination paint, meaning it takes the place of both primer AND paint. If you have unpainted walls or walls that are a dark color, you will absolutely need either a primer or a paint/primer. The Brilliance saves you the trouble and expense of having to buy a separate primer. Luckily I was painting over a hue that was very similar to the Palomino Gold. Even so, I still ended up needing to paint 3 coats. If you are covering up a dark color, you might even need more. I bought 2 gallons of paint for a 160 sq. ft. room and only used about 1 1/2 gallons which was great because now I have plenty extra for touch ups if I ever need it.
We have a lot of black accents which ended up being very striking next to the Palomino Gold. I love contrast.
We previously had white wood blinds on the one window in the room and nothing covered the sliding glass door. I always hated that anybody could see into our office if they were in our back yard. Window treatments were of high priority to this makeover.
For the window next to David’s desk we chose a roman shade. I really wanted to soften the room up a lot and the white wood blinds really had to go. For the sliding glass door, I found some inexpensive drapes and a black metal rod that worked perfectly. The funny thing is… after I had selected the colors (gold, red, black) I then realized that these are the colors of my blog. Hmmm… maybe my sub-conscious was trying to tell me something.
And remember that picture that I bought David for his birthday… last year? It is now up in the room as our focal point.
A few other accessories and Voila! A makeover to be proud of.
I had so much fun doing this project that I’m ready for another. I’m thinking of tackling Lauryn’s room next. What do you think?
