Share a Coke and a Song

Remember back in the day… (ahem, I think I’m showing my age here)… when we used to sit for hours (and hours) in front of our radio trying desperately to listen to our favorite songs over and over again so we could write down all the lyrics? Please tell me it wasn’t just me. I’d sit for hours in my room with an ice cold bottle of Coca-Cola™ and my radio and my tape deck ready to hit GO as soon as the “good” songs came on. I think I must have made dozens of mix tapes.

Lyrics were a big deal because it was so hard to get them all right. These days, you can just Google a song lyric, but in my day, unless you used up all your babysitting money for an actual record that came with lyrics, you were pretty much on your own. I think I filled notebooks full of song lyrics. I knew every word to every song… and had them all written down to prove it. Those songs meant everything to me and I treasured that little lyric book. I still have it tucked away in a box somewhere. You don’t throw away those kinds of memories.

Song lyrics (the ones we remember) make up a lifetime of memories. I can remember what song was playing in so many pivotal moments. A song lyric can make you happy, make you sad, and get you through a difficult time. Who doesn’t remember the Coca-Cola commercial with people all across the nation singing? Exactly! Music brings people together like nothing else can.

I love what Coca-Cola is doing with their new Coca-Cola Share a Coke and a Song bottles. I wanted to go buy up every single one I could find. Okay… maybe I did buy quite a few of them at Albertsons. I almost don’t want to drink them I love the packaging so much.

My kids have become lyric obsessed too. Almost every day we are looking up the lyrics to some new song. They have to know the words to every song out there. We’ll be sitting in the car and they seriously know the words to everything! Crazy!

Since song lyrics have had so much meaning to all of us, I thought it would be fun to create some end of year gifts that really capture those special moments. These are easy, DIY projects that you can do any time, with any materials, and they can be personalized to anyone.

Supplies

supplies

Your supplies will vary, but in general you want to have some paper to work with. You can use existing sheet music (old or new) or you can do what I did and print out some sheet music images. You can also just print out lyrics to your favorite songs and use those as well.

You’ll also want to have on hand some items that you’ll be attaching the paper to. I have inexpensive wooden clipboards and some hanging hearts. You could also use shoes boxes, glass jars, or anything else that can be decoupaged. Seriously… everything can be decoupaged.

Let’s Craft

There are a few ways you can do your decoupage.
– You can trace your shape onto the paper and cut it out to size.
– You can do more of a collage of music and use different shapes and sizes of paper.
– You can just decoupage an entire sheet onto the front of your shape and then trim the back with a craft knife.

Decoupage is great because you can use a ton of it and your project will dry just fine with no trace of the stickiness. These are great for holiday gifts, teacher gifts, or just because. Plus, they are pretty simple to make… almost foolproof for those who don’t consider themselves crafty.

Are you all about the music and lyrics too? One of my favorite apps is Shazam. It lets you get the song title and artist of any song that you hear… just get into the app on your phone and let the phone do the listening. You can download the Shazam App for your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android phone. It’s great for people like me who never remember what a song is actually called.
