There is a sadness in my heart this year: our beloved Lombardi Ranch won’t be opening due to the drought we’ve been having here in Southern California. My family has been visiting Lombardi Ranch since we moved to the area 17 years ago. Fall just won’t be the same without it. But… Fall comes regardless, and while we don’t exactly have falling leaves here in Santa Clarita, we DO have a bunch of fantastic things to do in and around the city.
FRIGHT FEST – Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia
This is a MUST for every amusement park and Halloween fan! We actually just went for the first time last year (the kids were finally all old enough) and we had an amazing time. When the sun goes down, the Zombies come out… in full force. They take over the park and might even scare the you-know-what out of you. It’s all in good fun… they aren’t allowed to touch you, so you don’t have to worry about that. But they ARE pretty scary. You might even see one sitting next to you on a roller coaster. September 26 – November 1, 2015
18TH ANNUAL FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL – Underwood Family Farms, Moorpark
There are way too many events to list, but some favorites are the Giant Pumpkin Contest, Antique Tractor Weekend, and the Western Weekend. There are different things going on each weekend (check the website for details) and there are always games for the kids, music, lots of fruits and veggies to be picked, and on Halloween, if you come dressed in costume, you’ll get free admission. October 3 – 31, 2015
HAUNTED JAILHOUSE –Sheriff’s Station, Santa Clarita
Each year, the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station puts on a Haunted Jailhouse. It is usually held the Sunday before Halloween, but please call for exact days and times.
UNDERWATER PUMPKIN CARVING – Santa Clarita Aquatic Center
This is pretty cool – underwater pumpkin carving! It’s kind of self-explanatory but you will get a kick out of watching these scuba divers go to town on these pumpkins. Saturday, October 17 at 4:00pm.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Santa Clarita Marathon. This event includes a full marathon, a half marathon, a 5K run, Mayor’s Walk, and a Kid K run and takes place on November 8th. Whether you want to run yourself or stand on the sidelines cheering the runners on, this is a great way to spend a fall day. This event is an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.
BENNETT’S HONEY FARM – Route 126 between Santa Clarita and Ventura
My kids love this place. Bennett’s Honey Farm is open year round and has a huge selection of different types of honey. Sure, you could buy them at the local stores, but that wouldn’t be any fun. You can taste test the different varieties… and also get a lesson on how bees actually make all that honey. On your way back from the honey farm, stop in at some of the local farm stands dotting Route 126.
BOW WOWS & MEOWS – Hart Park, Newhall
This free pet fair is held every year at Hart Park in Newhall. Bring your own pet and visit the many vendors from the around the area. There are also fun dog shows, a low cost vaccine clinic, food trucks, bounce houses for the kids, raffles, and pet adoption. October 11, 2015 from 11am – 4pm.
ICE SKATING – Ice Station, Valencia
We might still be sweating in 100 degree heat, but you can cool off pretty fast at the Ice Station. Even if it’s been years since you’ve been on ice skates, you can rent a pair and try your hand at moving around the rink. There is a lot going on at the Ice Station, from hockey games to figure skating lessons to birthday parties. Check the schedule for free skate times. There is also a snack bar and arcade upstairs.
