I found this little plaque at a Hallmark store a few years ago. I thought it was inspirational and I bought it for my husband. He needed a little push at the time, and it’s been sitting on his desk ever since.
Yesterday, a friend posted another Disney quote on Facebook and I remembered that this plaque was sitting on the desk downstairs. I took a photo of it and then I spent some time staring at the message.
In the past few days, I’ve had calls and emails from friends, acquaintances and random bloggers who all had questions for me. Many had to do with their blogs and re-branding, some had to do with the ins-and-outs of working with brands, and others had to do with straight business questions about tax issues and how to promote themselves. Most people would be annoyed at the barage of questions. After all, this isn’t my business… I’m not a business consultant or a branding expert. I don’t do PR and I certainly don’t consider myself an expert in anything. But… I found myself answering all these questions and… wait for it… LOVING IT!
I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years now. That’s a long time to do anything, especially blogging. I can’t say I was one of the first… blogging has been around for over 10 years now, but I think sticking it out this long, attending numerous blog conferences, and being involved in the planning of 2 of my own, I can say that I’ve learned a thing or two. And the “business” of blogging is something that I absolutely love. More specifically, I love helping and educating new bloggers about this incredible field. I think I missed my calling. I should have gone to business school and become a consultant.
My bigger point, looking at that little plaque, is that running a business is something I always wanted to do. I’ve done small ones… I had 2 different interior design businesses of my own and I had a boutique gift business with a friend, but none of those really fulfilled my inner soul. What was missing was the direct correlation between what I offered and seeing the recipient truly benefit from it. I actually like helping other people succeed.
I have a dream. I have a dream of having a social media and consulting business. I have a dream of working for myself and helping other bloggers and businesses make a bigger impact, a bigger profit, and a bigger imprint on the world. I don’t believe in coincidences, I don’t believe in luck. I believe that we’re given signs and it’s up to us to recognize them and jump on them… to DO something to move towards fulfilling that dream.
In the past few days, I’ve had a lot of signs. A lot of strange stuff has happened. I’ve met people, listened to speeches, talked to all these wonderful people who have come to me for advice. I dreamed big… and I’m taking all the signs I’ve gotten along the way and I’m running with it.
I know you all have big dreams too. What is holding you back? Fear? Money? Ridicule? Nothing great comes without taking chances and stepping out of your comfort zone. Believe me, it’s a hard thing to do. But in the end… it is so worth it.
“If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It!”
Don’t just dream it… make it happen!
